The state Department of Transportation has begun installing dust screens around Lahaina town to help reduce the spread of potentially hazardous materials across the roadways in the wake of the deadly fire in the town.
The measure aims to protect highway users along Honoapiilani Highway and the Lahaina Bypass.
Installation began with the digging of fence posts on Wednesday and is expected to be complete within a month, the department said. The dust screens will be maintained by DOT crews and will remain until further notice.
The department added that the dust screens will not interfere with recovery efforts in Lahaina by federal, state, county and volunteer agencies.
The public is urged to access West Maui only if necessary.
